14-16 Chance Street, Shoreditch, London, E2 7HR
5 residential units mixed use development
Construction cost: £1.6 M
The site is adjacent to the pioneering 19th century Boundary Road Estate and its Conservation area. The disused site is at the centre of an area that had a former industrial use but which in recent times has become an artistic enclave, currently going through significant regeneration.
Our proposal was to produce 5 large family sized apartments meeting borough and national guidance aiming to reverse the trends of families deserting the city to live on its fringes. At ground level, a B1 commercial unit has been provided, to take account of the media and creative industries that are gathering and working out
of the area.
The design has been driven by the desire to create a solution that responds to the industrial history, architectural features and scale of the street. Its corner site concentrates the view to Hawksmoor’s Spitalfields church, as well as completing the street line of Old Nichol street. In this way, the scheme contributes to the streetscape.
Whilst modern, the design is restrained and conservative, using a limited palette of materials that reflect and reinterpret the local vernacular.
